Following a massive air assault against Hamas in Gaza that began Dec. 27, Israel on Jan. 3 launched a ground invasion of the small strip of land inhabited by 1.5 million Palestinians. Casualties are sure to rise as the fighting moves into densely populated areas. Gaza medics have reported that some 660 Palestinians have been killed, nearly 200 of them children, and more than 2,950 wounded. Another report states that about 45 percent of the wounded are civilians. At least eight Israeli soldiers have been killed, three by "friendly fire," and rockets launched by Hamas have killed three Israeli civilians.
This time around, Hamas provoked Israel by deciding not to renew its six-month ceasefire with Israel, which ended Dec. 19, and stepping up its rocket attacks against Israel. It also reportedly used the ceasefire as an opportunity to double the range of its rockets to 40 km. Whatever its political calculations, Hamas sowed the seeds for the current conflict.
Israel shares responsibility for the significant casualty rate among Gaza's ordinary citizens. Hamas militants also shoulder some blame because they deliberately operate from areas populated by civilians. One factor behind Israel's excessive election could be the parliamentary election Feb. 10. To win the election, the government wants to show that it is doing its best to secure the safety of Israeli citizens. It reportedly prepared for the offensive for more than six months.
Israel says its military action is a limited incursion to eradicate terrorism. Hamas, meanwhile, has vowed to fight "until the last breath." French President Nicolas Sarkozy's efforts to bring about a quick ceasefire achieved little since Israel wants a provision to prevent Hamas from rearming.
As long as Hamas does not remove its rockets and accept the Jewish state's right to exist, it will be difficult for Israel to reach a ceasefire agreement. But an extended Israeli offensive would increase casualties and boost Palestinian support for Hamas. Egypt and other countries are striving to bring about an immediate ceasefire to end the sufferings of Gaza residents. It is hoped such efforts will bear fruit.

English Came To Melbourne Bearing Gifts
Text:
The English Homeless World Cup team has came to Melbourne bearing gifts, thanks to their coach Louis Garvey, who also happens to be the Manchester United Foundation coach. On the banks of the Yarra today, Garvey presented Aussie Street Socceroo captain Alex Marshall and vice-captain Stephen Maloney with a soccer ball signed by the entire Manchester United football team. The ball is a gift to be auctioned in order to raise funds to help get the Australian team to the Milan 2009 Homeless World Cup. “It’s great to have the support from people like Manchester United,” said Marshall. They’re supporting a great community grass-roots program.” “This is awesome, especially for me as I’m a Manchester United fan. It’s a great gesture by the English lads. There’s plenty of people out there who’d love to have this ball,” said UK-born Street Socceroo Steve Maloney,Asked why Manchester United would support the Australian Street Soccer Program, Garvey was generous in his praise for the Aussies. “For the same reason why we’ve supported the England team for six years. I met George (Halkias – coach of the Street Socceroos) at the Edinburgh 2005 Homeless World Cup and I’ve seen his program here in Melbourne. “This gift is a way of saying thanks to George and Melbourne and the Homeless World Cup. “I know how hard it is to find the money to get teams to the Homeless World Cup. A signed ball from Manchester United means a lot to people – it can raise a lot of money and I hope it will help get the Aussie boys to Milan next year.”

No such thing as 'safe' cocaine, experts warn
The image of cocaine as a "safe party drug" is a myth that must be dispelled, say UK experts, as a study shows the drug is linked to 3% of sudden deaths.
The British Heart Foundation said the findings, published in the European Heart Journal, were a reminder that the drug can have devastating effects.
Although the data comes from south-west Spain, researchers said the results should apply to Europe in general.
They said deadly consequences of using cocaine can happen to anyone taking it.
Fotini Rozakeas of the British Heart Foundation said: "The reality is that there are risks every time you use it.
"Cocaine can have devastating effects on the user including heart attacks, life-threatening heart rhythms, strokes and even sudden death.
"The potential deadly consequences from cocaine use can happen to anyone who takes it, even in previously young healthy people with no history of heart disease."
Deadly cocktail
In the study, 21 out of 668 sudden deaths were related to cocaine use and all of these occurred in men aged between 21 and 45.
Most involved problems with the heart and the majority of the men were also smokers and had been drinking alcohol at the same time as taking cocaine.
Lead researcher Dr Joaquin Lucena, of the Institute of Legal Medicine in Seville, said these habits added up to a lethal cocktail for the heart.
He said: "Our findings show that cocaine use causes adverse changes to the heart and arteries that then lead to sudden death."
His teams looked at post-mortem reports and investigated all the circumstances surrounding sudden deaths in Seville between 2003 and 2006.
Their findings suggested any amount of the drug could be toxic.
"Some patients have poor outcomes with relatively low blood concentrations, whereas others tolerate large quantities without consequences," they told the European Heart Journal.

Tobey Maguire to leave Spider-Man films
US actor Tobey Maguire and director Sam Raimi will not be returning for a fourth film in the hit Spider-Man franchise, it has been announced.
Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios said a new film would be released in 2012, but with a new story, director and cast.
The new movie will focus on the superhero's alter-ego, Peter Parker, in high school.
The announcement comes amid reports production on Spider-Man 4 had stalled after script revisions.
"I am so proud of what we accomplished with the Spider-Man franchise over the last decade," Maguire said in a statement.
"Beyond the films themselves, I have formed some deep and lasting friendships. I am excited to see the next chapter unfold in this incredible story."
'Creative possibilities'
Raimi, who directed the first three Spider-Man films, added: "Working on the Spider-Man movies was the experience of a lifetime for me."
"While we were looking forward to doing a fourth one together, the studio and Marvel have a unique opportunity to take the franchise in a new direction, and I know they will do a terrific job."
Sony said it would have more news about the next Spider-Man movie in coming weeks.
"We're very excited about the creative possibilities that come from returning to Peter's roots," Amy Pascal, co-chairman of Sony Pictures Entertainment said.
The first three Spider-Man films - released in 2002, 2004 and 2007 - were box office smashes, earning $2.5bn (£1.6bn) combined worldwide.

Marriage statistics
With the number of marriages which end in divorce rising, are the odds stacked against couples who are about to tie the knot? We asked an expert to crunch the numbers.
From the late 1970s, the number of people getting married in Northern Ireland was in steady decline.
But for the best part of the last decade, the numbers are on the way back up again, so is marriage coming back into fashion, or are we simply waiting longer before committing to one person for the rest of our lives?
Dr David Marshall is a statistician with the Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency, based in Belfast.
We asked him, among other questions, how the number of people getting married today compares with past generations in Northern Ireland.
